Decent Living Project



Decent Living – Improving the lives of people living in slums in Kampala through improved housing, water and sanitation” is a Water Aid Uganda Funded project that Environmental Alert is implementing in partnership with Shelter and Settlements Alternatives: Uganda Human Settlements Network (SSA:UHSNET) and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). This project works towards creating improved living conditions and a more decent life for slum dwellers, strengthening networks to influence equitable and sustainable access to WASH services and appropriate shelter for slum inhabitants.

Environmental Alert’s focus in this project lies in three areas;

Advocacy – Building, strengthening and facilitating civic expression towards improved WASH services through sensitizing communities on the operating policy and legislative environment as well as fostering their capacity to actively participate and influence service delivery in WASH

Construction – Improving access to WASH facilities and services through construction of public water borne toilets, Ferro Cement Tanks and de-silting of drainage channels passing through communities.

Business Enterprise Development – Environmental Alert has facilitated Organization development of identified women and youth business groups that have keen interest in WASH related activities. These businesses include briquette making, urban agriculture, biogas production, waste recycling and Re-use, crafts making, etc

These groups are trained in business & financial management skills, production skills to enable them improve their businesses.

Apart from generation of income for the community members, WASH related businesses play a vital role in promoting a healthy environment for all through value addition to wastes, and provision clean and sustainable energy solutions to all.
